Things to Do: Nintendo DS Dedicated Router

by @ August 22, 2006. Filed under things to do

I’d like to convert my extra Linksys WRT54G access point into a Nintendo DS access point. Ideally it will:

My current problem is that I’m not sure how to limit the network traffic to be DS only. I’m guessing port limiting using iptables will allow me to do this, but I’ve yet to find a good source of ports used by the DS. Another idea is to only allow traffice to/from the range of IP addresses used by the DS game servers. But this will only work if the game traffic is also routed though the servers.

Update: Some information at Nintendowifi.com showing which ports need to be open. Unfortunately 80 and 443 are listed, which I would need to turn off to keep casual laptops from browsing the web. Hopefully these are only listed for the upcoming DS Browser to work. Also listed are some IP ranges, but they are for internal networking of the Nintendo USB adapter and computer.

TCP:
Allow traffic to all destinations on ports: 28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, 80, and 443
UDP:
Allow all traffic to all destinations. (Necessary for peer-to-peer connections and game play). The Network Test tool can be used from a computer behind your firewall to test if outbound UDP is allowed.
